"In
September, 2002 the Ganes family, residing in the town
of Bayonne, New Jersey, set out to win one million dollars
by capturing an actual UFO on video and proving the very
real existence ofextraterrestrials. Their dream, however,
was shattered by their sudden disappearance in October,
2002. They were neither seen nor heard from again. Their
home movies, taken during their attempts to uncover the
mysteries of outer space, were recently discovered. Perhaps
they will aid in understanding what happened to this courageous
American family..."
UFO
FEVER is an all-improvised comedy feature "written"
by director Lee Bennett Sobel with Geraldine Winters.
The movie pokes fun at the American dream of trying
to get rich quick and our obsession with extraterrestrial
phenomena.
Director
Lee Bennett Sobel's first feature film "Rockabilly
Vampire" was released in 2001 on VHS and DVD
by Troma Entertainment. In late summer, 2002, Sobel
began casting for UFO FEVER by auditioning the best
and brightest of New York's comedy improvisational actors.
Armed with a basic premise and some notes, Sobel worked
fast and loose with the actors to create some of their
characters on the spot that later appeared in the movie.
Once
the movie was cast, Sobel worked with screenwriter Geraldine
Winters to write a scene-by-scene outline for the film
that contained no scripted dialogue. The scenes were
refined during rehearsals and in September, 2002, the
production moved to an actual trailer park in Bayonne,
New Jersey. Filmed over a period of three days, Sobel
shot the movie himself from the point-of-view of the
stoner son of the Ganes family trying to capture a UFO
on video, with performer Kelly Heresy standing closeby
to provide the voice of the mostly offscreen character.
The movie was shot on a Sony TRV-950 mini DV camcorder
with a camera-mounted shotgun microphone. Each scene
was shot continuously without any cuts (as it would
be since the movie is supposed to look like the Ganes
family's home movies) with the camera following as many
as nine actors! To say it was a challenge would be an
understatement, but Sobel was used to working fast ("Rockabilly
Vampire," his first feature, was shot in ten days)
and the comedy improv actors performed at a high intensity
that enabled them to get each scene in just a few takes.
The
movie is a comedy but is also soaked in the realism
of trailer park life which was going on around the company
as they made the film. For instance, when they arrived
on day one to shoot the movie a homeless person was
found in the trailer they were going to shoot in. Almost
no art direction was needed.
The
soundtrack for the film features many of New York's
hottest rock n roll bands, who will also be performing
at the movie's premiere on June 1, 2003. All rights
to UFO FEVER are presently available. All interested
parties inquiring about distribution may reach Lee Sobel
at Lo-Fi Entertainment by emailing him at LeeSobel@aol.com.
